On April 8th, MIC had the honor to attend Rock Columbus at A&R Music Bar, an event organized by the Rock Music Club at Ohio State. Rock Columbus featured local up-and-coming groups: Runner and Bobby, Simon Molnar, MUDD, and Saving Escape.

Runner and Bobby, a group including students from Denison University, had a coming-of-age, comforting indie music style with stunning instrumentals and heartfelt vocals. Ranging from indie rock to country, lead singer, Parker Bailey displayed a showcase of expressive vocals and musicality. Their set gave off psychedelic indie vibes and was thoroughly entertaining.

Simon Molnar, a group from Columbus, created an intimate connection with the audience, with enthusiastic instrumentals and vocals, including the lead singer playing the trumpet mid-set. Their instrumentals included bass, electric guitar, trumpet, drums, and a variety of percussion instruments including a tambourine. Simon Molnar has performed many shows in the Columbus area, including a show at the Basement in December of 2022. Self-described as folk rock, the group was energetic and were tremendous performers. Overall, their set was vibrant, including insane guitar riffs and capturing vocals, and it was a joy to watch them perform.

MUDD, an indie rock band from Columbus, includes four members: Vince (vocals and guitar), Steve (vocals and bass), Collin (guitar), and Nick (drums). Their debut EP was released earlier this year, after performing many weekend shows at local venues. Their set featured covers, along with future releases and music off their EP. Vince presented the crowd with heartfelt vocals and overall, it was a great set.

The last group of the night, Saving Escape, is a group originally from Cincinnati, initially coined as a basement project who’s now been involved in the music scene for 9 years. Ranging between many styles, the group performed with inspiration from jazz, hard rock, blues, metal, and hints of pop. The four members, Kala Rose (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Jacob Boldman (lead guitar), Charlotte Graham (bass), and Alex Muccino (drums), met at the O’Keeffe Music Academy in Cincinnati. Lead singer Kala Rose kicked off the set with serenading vocals which blew the crowd away. Her impressive range, along with range of styles was intriguing and made a great impression.
