Internship Panel
On Tuesday, November 8th, Music Industry Club was fortunate enough to hear from fellow students Dennis McAfee, Max Lew and Evan Israeloff about the music career opportunities they take part in as students at Ohio State. Each of the students are representatives from different music groups, and their shared experience provided insight into the purposes and goals of college-level positions that can help springboard future careers in the industry.
The first presentation was by the Grammy U Ambassador for The Ohio State University, Evan Israeloff. As a member of Grammy U, Evan was able to talk to points of the ambassadorship that have been beneficial to his music industry network and career opportunities. Among the many benefits of landing an ambassadorship for Grammy U, students applying for the program gain access to networking events, soundcheck events with award-winning artists, and a mentorship program that extends the usefulness of the program beyond their time as Grammy U members. Evan spoke particularly about the mentorship program, as it paired him with multiple talented music professionals who have each been indispensable in his current and future industry endeavors. For more information on the program and how to apply, please check their website or email Evan at evanisraeloff@gmail.com.
Following Evan’s presentation was fellow MIC member and CMA Education Program member Max Lew. Being an education program managed by the Country Music Association, Max detailed many perks and benefits to being accepted into this nationwide network of music professionals. The program offers professional development events curated for the music industry, resume building and interviewing knowledge that make students stand out in applying for music industry jobs. Max also spoke highly of the opportunities for students to be mentored by current professionals, who have been incredibly helpful in his music industry career. For more information on the program and how to apply, visit their website or contact Max Lew at (216) 401-5242.
Finally, President of Music Industry Club Dennis McAfee presented to the club about his position as a Universal Music Group 1824 Strategic Partnership Representative. As the job title entails, this position functions less like the other programs and much more like an active part-time work opportunity. While there are many specified positions for 1824 representatives, the strategic partnership representative combines all aspects of PR, marketing, content curation, and making connections with bands at the local level. All in all, this position is unique from other positions because representatives are also expected to find ways that UMG can grow through projects they organize themselves. The paid partnership program has taught Dennis all he knows today about the music industry, granting him opportunities to work under mainstream artists such as MGK in locations all across the country. In his own words, “It’s a really fun gig.”
