Weekly Gems 1/27
Like what Karina said on the last installment of Weekly Gems, “New Year, New Music.” With the first month of 2025 nearly coming to an end, I’ve got some songs that have been in heavy rotation for me lately:
“Pose For The Pic” – Che
Che blessed his fans with his first single since his amazing 2024 project Sayso Says. His past album made it onto multiple Top Albums of 2024 lists, so dropping this track right into the new year was a smart move to keep his fanbase engaged and his hype alive. With production by Legion, I think this song is the perfect start to his new project rollout.
“Loose Ends” – Imogen Heap
I recently re-listened to Speak for Yourself by Imogen Heap, and this song stood out to me. The production is truly one of a kind, and for it to have been recorded in 2004 is insane. Imogen Heap's performance on this track, especially her storytelling about the downfall of her relationship, is amazing. This album is definitely on my all-time list—its sound was way ahead of its time.
“Chanel” – Babyxsosa
I’ve been listening to Babyxsosa for years, and it's amazing to see her keep pushing her sound in new directions. Her last album, BABYONCE, was like an alternative house project, kind of in the same realm as 100 gecs. Then, just three weeks after that, she dropped Chanel. Produced by the legendary underground producer Devstacks, known for his signature regalia sound, Chanel feels almost like a long haiku. Babyxsosa delivers multiple one-liners throughout the song, and it’s just too good.
“F&N” – Nine Vicious
If I could put stocks into certain artists, I’d be all in on Nine Vicious. He’s definitely up next in the underground rap scene. His sound and style remind me of 2011-2015 Young Thug, but he makes it his own. He’s been developing his own cadence and flow, and this track is one of his breakout songs from his debut mixtape, Studio Addict. Recently, he’s been collaborating with bigger producers and getting promo from platforms like Underground Sound and Kidstakeover. Keep an eye out—Nine Vicious is going to be everywhere soon.
“Say It” – 2hollis
Wrapping up this week with the great 2hollis. I know this is just an interlude, but still—2hollis is amazing. His ability to self-produce all of his projects makes him one of the best new artists out right now. I’m also including this track because I’ll be seeing him live in Detroit soon.
