New Year New Music
The new year is the perfect time to recultivate the energy you’ll be carrying around. If you can’t put your thoughts into words, let music do it for you. A resolution of mine this year is to both surround myself with more music but to do so more intentionally. Let your songs reflect how you want your day to go, for music is a powerful thing. On my journey of getting my life together with music I've been doing a lot of listening, no really, just look at my Spotify Wrapped. Here are some of the tunes I’ve been using to kickstart my day.
“El CLúB” - Bad Bunny
Need I say less? Like it’s Benito… Unlike Benny here, I'm definitely not wondering what my ex is up to but I am absolutely in that club. For anyone who needs some encouragement to just hit send at 2am, this is your song. Now I’m not promoting bad decisions here but if Bad Bunny has these thoughts, then you can too. Not to mention the hints of cumbia with the digital production is definitely building the hype for his new album. This song could easily be mixed for the dancefloor or for late night drives when you’re in your feels. Who doesn’t love duality?
“Mil Mujeres” - Rauw Alejandro
As soon as the percussion starts in this song I instantly jump out of my seat. Listening to this song feels like riding a roller coaster. The mix of brass with electric beats is mesmerizing to both my soul and feet. This song is a good reminder to be secure with your own company but also not being afraid to let others in, maybe even at the same time. Practice some free will and do what’s going to bring you happiness. Breakups are hard but you can’t bounce back if you’re not willing to get up.
“Crybaby” - SZA
While breakups are hard, realizing you’re the problem is just as hard. Watching the veil of who you are unfold before your eyes would make anyone cry. In fact, I cried in my car to this song a few days ago. Sometimes you need a wakeup call to start your day. It’s easy to let pent up emotions speak for you but your soul should speak louder than words. Listening to this sparks a montage in my head of all the wrongs I’ve done to the one I love. Yes, I'm an asshole and I will do something about it. Needless to say, SZA just gets me and I already know the lyrics to this whole album and you should too.
“W1LL U L13?” - SAILORR
SAILORR hit digital fame with her song “POOKIE’S REQUIEM” blowing up on social media platforms. However, this new single paired with it resonates so deeply in my soul. The soft production matches her melodic voice so well and showcases her range. Having songs of revenge and retribution, this song proves the duality of emotions. It’s perfect to comfort anxious girlies in a relationship. We can’t help but have this small voice in our head questioning absolutely everything. This song can help remind you that your thoughts and emotions don’t make you crazy. Hold onto ‘the one’ with love and care, but if they do lie then we can go back to revenge.
“Passenger Princess” - Aminé (feat. Smino)
If you need a morning boost or a reminder of who you are, this is your song. Aminé has always had tasteful confidence in his tunes. The simple beats showcase his flow and prove that what is being said can be better than what is being heard. This track paired with Smino is a duo that is guaranteed to add a certain je ne sais quoi to how you view yourself. It’s perfect for strutting to class or to whoever you sent that 2am text to. I’m never disappointed with what Aminé drops and this is no exception.
